WBUR: Poor conditions at Louisiana ICE detention center holding Tufts student, advocates say

WBUR has reported, former detainees have described punitive and unsanitary conditions at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Basile, where a Turkish Tufts University student, Öztürk, is being held.

 In an August 2024 report, Anthony Enriquez—vice president of U.S. advocacy and litigation at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights—warned that Öztürk faces the same risks many detainees endure: being cut off from legal resources, enduring filthy, inhumane conditions, and abusive treatment by guards. The report also detailed that Öztürk, who has asthma, has suffered at least three asthma attacks after being detained without her daily medication. Her attorneys have demanded her immediate release in federal court.”
