The New Orleans Advocate: What to Know About Louisiana’s ICE Detention Centers After Mahmoud Khalil’s Arrest

A Louisiana ICE detention facility made national news this week after Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil was arrested and taken there by federal immigration officials. Khalil, who led pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus, was detained by ICE agents in New York and transferred to Louisiana despite holding a green card. According to the New Orleans Advocate, the 30-year-old remained jailed at the Central Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Jena as of Wednesday afternoon. 

In response to the arrest, protests have erupted nationwide, with many questioning its legality. The arrest has also drawn attention to the conditions of Louisiana’s detention facilities. In 2024, a coalition of immigrant rights groups, including RFK Human Rights, released a report alleging widespread abuse at these facilities, citing inhumane conditions, cockroach-infested food, lack of hygiene products, and sexual abuse.
