The New Orleans Advocate: Arrest of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, detention in Jena stir small protest in New Orleans

The arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a recent Columbia University graduate and pro-Palestinian activist, and his swift transfer to a Louisiana detention facility, prompted New Orleans students and demonstrators to rally Tuesday outside U.S. Rep. Troy Carter’s office. Joining nationwide protests, they opposed the detention of Khalil, a U.S. green card holder. Anthony Enriquez, vice president of U.S. advocacy and litigation at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, stated to The New Orleans Advocate that detaining Mahmoud Khalil in Jena, Louisiana, was a strategic decision.

“ICE has in the past retaliated against immigrants…by sending people who are arrested in other states to Louisiana specifically because those detention centers are located in very rural, isolated towns,” Enriquez said. “It makes it more difficult for them to have contact with their family, attorney and people who could be witnesses in immigration proceedings who can support their legal claims.”
