Guardian: Pregnant Woman in Medical Distress Deported from US, says Attorney

The Guardian reports that a 21-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant and in a state of medical distress was deported to Colombia Wednesday afternoon, despite a court order issued later that evening seeking to block her removal. Zharick Daniela Buitrago Ortiz, who had been in ICE custody, was placed on a plane before the temporary restraining order could be enforced.

Speaking with the Guardian, Anthony Enriquez, our Vice President of Advocacy and Litigation at the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center and counsel for Ortiz, said, “By the time she issued that order, the government had already boarded her onto a plane. She is now in Colombia,” adding that Ortiz remains in physical distress and has repeatedly been denied necessary medical care.

The case raises urgent concerns about ICE’s treatment of pregnant people in custody and the erosion of safeguards meant to protect medically vulnerable individuals from detention and deportation.
