Newsweek reports that a 21-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant and experiencing “serious medical distress” is facing deportation from Atlanta International Airport, according to her attorney. Zharick Daniela Buitrago Ortiz fled Colombia with her family after her father was murdered for reporting political corruption. She arrived in the United States seeking asylum, but was separated from her family because she was over 18 at the time.
Speaking with Newsweek, Anthony Enriquez, our Vice President of Advocacy and Litigation at the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center and counsel for Buitrago, condemned ICE’s actions, stating, “This is an abuse of a pregnant woman in detention. This is an example of ICE acting without any type of compassion for someone who is on the point of labor. And we’d like this to stop immediately.”
The case raises urgent concerns about the treatment of pregnant people in immigration custody and the broader human rights implications of deportations carried out amid medical emergencies.
