Palestinian activist and legal permanent resident Mahmoud Khalil remains detained at the Central Louisiana ICE Processing Center after being apprehended by federal immigration authorities at a university residence. His arrest followed his participation in a 2024 Gaza solidarity encampment at Columbia University. As activists fight to halt his deportation, Khalil’s fate now lies in the hands of federal courts.
Speaking with Newsweek, Anthony Enriquez, vice president of U.S. Advocacy and Litigation at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, shed light on the inhumane and abusive conditions found in detention centers like the one where Mahmoud Khalil is being held.
“Mahmoud is one of hundreds of immigrants held in CLIPC, a private prison with abusive conditions that gives executives billions of dollars in taxpayer handouts,” said Enriquez.
