After 45 days in federal custody, Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk has returned to Massachusetts following a judge’s order for her release from a Louisiana ICE detention facility. Her case has drawn national attention to the harsh conditions in privately run immigration centers. Ozturk has since spoken out on behalf of the 900 women still detained under similar conditions.
Anthony Enriquez, vice president of advocacy and litigation at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, condemned the GEO Group facility where Ozturk was held, calling it part of a broader system of abuse and legal obstruction. “These places are in incredibly isolated regions… They make it impossible for detained people to actually have due process,” said Enriquez.
