Jezebel reports that Zharick Daniela Buitrago Ortiz, a 21-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant and in need of emergency medical assistance, is being held in an Atlanta airport while awaiting deportation to Colombia. Ortiz and her mother fled to the United States after her father was killed for speaking out against corruption in their home country. They sought asylum, but Daniela was issued an order for expedited removal following a “credible fear” hearing.
Speaking with Jezebel, Anthony Enriquez, our Vice President of U.S. Advocacy and Litigation at the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center, commented on ICE’s lack of medical care for a pregnant woman in distress. “She has asked for medical care and has been denied it.”
