Investigative Post: ICE abuse of Detainees in Batavia Facility

Recently released federal audits of ICE detention facilities in Batavia have exposed the inhumane and abusive treatment of detainees by facility guards. The 2023 audit detailed excessive force and deplorable living conditions within the center. In addition, former detainees have spoken out, leading 40 individuals to file a civil rights complaint with the Department of Homeland Security.

An article published by the Investigative Post highlighted Sarah Gillman, U.S. Litigation Director at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, as one of the attorneys representing the Batavia detainees. Speaking on the facility, Gillman stated, “It’s supposed to be civil detention, but it’s run, in many ways, like a maximum security, criminal facility.”
