Bangladesh
Following the 2024 student-led July Revolution and the end of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, Bangladesh’s Interim Government has taken some important steps to pursue accountability and institutional reforms to address the widespread abuses and political repression that occurred under Hasina. However, key human rights concerns remain ahead of the 2026 elections. Few reforms to key institutions have been implemented, victims of human rights violations are awaiting justice and accountability, and arbitrary arrests based on political affiliation or the exercise of freedom of expression continue to take place.

During a trip to Dhaka in 2025, our team visited a secret detention site run by the Rapid Action Battalion under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, where victims were forcibly disappeared for weeks, months, or even years. There, a lawyer named Mir Ahmad BinQuasem showed us the dark cell where he endured eight years of unimaginable suffering. He is one of the few who made it out alive from a secret site after Hasina’s regime fell last year.
