With COVID-19 spreading rapidly, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and local partners have been moving to facilitate emergency bail outs from jails across the country. First up: Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans.
RFK Human Rights, in partnership with the Safety and Freedom Fund at Operation Restoration (SAFF), secured the release of 22 of those held in pretrial detention, a step that will limit the spread of the disease among those incarcerated and jail staff alike.
While the global health crisis has intensified the need to reduce jail populations, RFK Human Rights president Kerry Kennedy has long called for reform of New Orleans’ unlawful cash bail system, recognizing how it has disproportionately harmed poor, black and brown communities.
