Upon hearing of the death of Harry Belafonte, we understood the necessity of memorializing Harry beyond his fame and examining him as the man he was. Our three interviewees, Gina Belafonte, Maria Belafonte, and David Goodman, were each able to speak to a more intimate side of Harry, having known him mostly in personal than professional contexts. We were impressed by Harry’s humanity, his kindness, and his wisdom through these never-before-heard anecdotes from his life.

In this project, we worked to incorporate the personal and professional achievements of Mr. Belafonte as well as the music that touched the hearts and souls of everyone who listened.

It is important that, as a community, we preserve the history of civil rights in this country and the stories of the people who risked their lives to advance the cause of justice. In conducting these interviews, we understood how, despite his death, Mr. Belafonte’s soul lives on through those he knew and what he did for the world. Join us as we explore the impactful legacy of one of America’s greatest artists, activists, and human rights defenders, and someone from whom we can all draw inspiration: Harry Belafonte.
