We must help our needy at home— yet we must also know the plight of the needy beyond our shores. So now each of us will consume as much nourishment as is eaten in a day and a half by more than half the world’s people. If we Americans were suddenly to join that less fortunate half of the human race, our next meal would be a late lunch the day after tomorrow— and our menu on that occasion would be one small bowl of cooked rice and perhaps a piece of fish about one inch square.
