On Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted on a bill that would have granted the Trump administration power to arbitrarily strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status – a blatant attempt to punish organizations that dare to speak truth to power and seek accountability. H.R. 9495 was narrowly defeated, but the effort is a chilling preview of what’s to come. This is our reality mere days after Donald Trump’s election. It is terrifying to think what awaits us beginning on January 20, 2025.
We must act urgently if we are to have any chance at challenging unchecked power. At Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, this means we will:
- Sue to protect immigrant human rights defenders from retaliatory deportation and abuse in isolated detention centers.
- Work with international human rights bodies to seek justice for families denied accountability for U.S. police killings.
- End the torture of the prolonged solitary confinement of imprisoned people advocating for human rights.
- Utilize every available avenue to safeguard civic space, both domestically and internationally, ensuring the protection of journalists, environmental activists, indigenous peoples, and LGBTQ+ communities who face increasing threats and repression.
The road ahead will be filled with challenges, but the fight for human rights is ongoing, and it demands all of us stand together. Your voice, your actions, and your unwavering belief in justice form the foundation of our collective strength. In the face of fear and adversity, let us unite in action, knowing that together, we hold the power to advance justice, uphold equality, and protect the fundamental dignity of every human being.
