Capstone: Spartan Solidarity for Survivors: Stronger Togeth
Michigan faces an acute housing rights crisis: landlords file nearly 200,000 eviction cases annually, displacing about 40,000 households, while only 4.8% of tenants have legal representation compared with 83% of landlords. Over 50% of renters are cost-burdened, and an estimated 33,000+ residents experience homelessness each year. In college towns like East Lansing students and low-income renters often lack access to plain-language guidance on leases, security deposits, eviction prevention, early lease breaks for safety, and emergency housing support. This project will develop a free, 24/7 Michigan Housing Rights Chatbot that provides step-by-step, locally tailored help and warm hand-offs to real people at trusted partner organizations, including the MSU College of Law Housing Clinic and the Tenants Resource Center. By combining legal expertise, user-centered design, and direct community input from interviews with residents, the chatbot aims to reach thousands of Michigan renters annually, filling a critical gap in accessible, actionable housing rights information and reducing preventable evictions and housing insecurity.
