What motivates you to be a changemaker in your community?
Growing up without hands and feet and living with chronic illness has enabled me to understand the importance of eliminating systemic and structural barriers. I’ve learned that it was never my disabilities that held me back, but rather the fact that the world is not accessible to disabled people. Ableism and biases against disabled people are the antithesis of progress and innovation. My life’s purpose is to use this principle to challenge how we live and work.
My Capstone
Capstone Focus Area: Education / Social Justice Advocacy – Disability Rights
I aim to work with the Arizona State University Accessibility Coalition (AccessCo) to develop an “Anti-Ableism: A Student Plan of Action” guidebook. The Anti-Ableism guidebook will serve three purposes. The guidebook’s first purpose is to outline how ableism and inequity in the education system directly impacts students with disabilities across educational systems and regions. The second purpose is to equip disabled students and allies with the tools to advocate effectively in their day-to-day lives and through legislative and civic engagement. The final purpose is to establish a framework for ensuring that education institutions and
