The 2001 RFK Book Award was presented to James Allen for Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America and George Packer for Blood of the Liberals. James Allen’s Without Sanctuary is a chilling collection of photographs of lynchings that bring the horrors of the past to life.

James Allen is a collector who uncovered a grisly trove of postcards and souvenir photographs of lynchings that became the subject of Without Sanctuary.
