What motivates you to be a changemaker in your community?
I’m motivated by my love for children. Children are sponges which is why their emotional experience has a significant effect on their future. I’m passionate about making those experiences as positive as possible.
Capstone: Empowering Students Through Language
The overall goal of this capstone project is to strengthen Multilingual Learners’ (MLLs) academic confidence by addressing their social-emotional needs. The first phase centers on research and proposes a new intervention model for MLL programs that incorporates students’ native languages. The second phase focuses on practical implementation, includuing establishing a volunteer program where Spanish-speaking students accompany MLLs in their classrooms, serving as interpreters and providing emotional support for newcomers. In addition, a workshop will be developed to share the MLL experience with education students and Winthrop Elementary School teachers, offering strategies and pedagogical methods for better supporting these learners. To further promote awareness and inclusion, I will also design a bilingual children’s book in English and Spanish that highlights the MLL experience.
