Gail Lumet Buckley received the 2002 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award for American Patriots: The Story of Blacks in the Military from the Revolution to Desert Storm, an account of the African-Americans who defended the United States despite racism both at home and in the ranks overseas.

Gail Lumet Buckley is a journalist and the daughter of Lena Horne. Her family history — The Hornes — became an American Masters documentary, and she narrated a documentary on black American families for PBS. She has written for the Los Angeles TimesVogue, the New York Daily News, and The New York Times. She lives in New York.
