Yahoo! News: A former magistrate exiled in the US fears an “attack” if she returns to Guatemala

A former judge on Guatemala’s Constitutional Court, Gloria Porras was well-known for championing anti-corruption efforts in the country. But for more than a decade, she has faced threats, fabricated criminal charges, and political pressure aimed at undermining her independence. These attacks ultimately forced her into exile to protect her safety.

Now, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights is working with partners to pursue accountability for her case and stop the broader attacks on judicial independence in Guatemala.

Porras recently appeared before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IAHCR) for a hearing on her case, stating that the persecution against her was “for political reasons and a strategy” to expel her from the Court.
