WAPT: Convening in the capital city: Leaders gather to honor civil rights icon

“We’re all here tonight to celebrate these extraordinary icons of civil rights, who gave their lives for justice for our country, to stop segregation, to ensure voting rights for all, and it’s not just about looking back at history 60 years ago. But it’s really about taking lessons from history and applying them to the injustices that we see across our country today.”

Civil rights leaders gathered in Jackson, Mississippi, to honor what would have been Medgar Evers’ 100th birthday with a powerful panel featuring the daughters of Medgar Evers, Robert F. Kennedy, and Vernon Dahmer. Kerry Kennedy, president of RFK Human Rights, joined the conversation to reflect on her father’s legacy and the enduring fight for equity and civil rights.

Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights is rebranding to honor the legacy of our founder and hero, Mrs. Ethel Skakel Kennedy. From now on, we will proudly be known as the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center

While our name is changing, our mission and work remain the same. We will continue to fight injustice, advance human rights, and hold governments accountable around the world in 2026 and beyond.
