This Week’s Spotlight on Human Rights

Since he entered politics, a decade ago, Donald Trump has castigated journalists for their skepticism and independence, calling the media “the enemy of the people,” a “threat to democracy,” “fake,” and “crooked bastards” whom he vows to prosecute. Now that he has secured a second term, he will be free to make good on his promises.

“Build the Wall” was Donald Trump’s rally cry in 2016, and he acted on his promise by tapping military budgets for hundreds of miles of border wall with Mexico. “Mass Deportation” was the buzzword that energized supporters for his White House bid in 2024. Trump’s victory sets the stage for a swift crackdown after an AP VoteCast survey showed the president-elect’s supporters were largely focused on immigration and inflation — issues the Republican has been hammering throughout his campaign.

Amnesty International on Thursday emphasized the importance of prioritizing climate justice and human rights at the upcoming COP29, which will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11 to 22 November. The human rights organization’s pre-summit statement underscores the necessity for COP29 leaders to integrate human rights considerations into all decision-making processes and highlights the pressing need for substantial climate finance to address the growing impacts of climate change.
