The New York Times: ‘People Are Losing Hope’ Inside ICE Detention Centers

Recent reports highlight a growing mental health crisis and rising suicide attempts in ICE detention centers across the U.S.

Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights staff attorney, Sarah Decker, spoke to the Times about one of her clients, a transgender woman born in Columbia who experienced suicidal thoughts when she was transported to an all-male facility and held in solitary confinement. RFK Human Rights’ client, Daniel Cortes de la Valle, recounted spending more than seven months in immigration detention, where he was forced to sleep in filthy cells, mocked by guards for his weight, and denied epilepsy medication.

Despite official suicide prevention protocols, detainees often face neglect, inadequate counseling, and harsh conditions that worsen their mental health.
