Rolling Stone: The Inter-American Court of Human Rights condemns Honduras in the case of Leonela Zelaya

In a historic event for the LGBTIQ+ community, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled against the State of Honduras and in favor of Honduran Leonela Zelaya, a trans woman murdered more than two decades ago. The Court’s decision in the case, co-litigated by Red Lésbica Cattrachas and the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center, represents a milestone in human rights by recognizing the State’s responsibility for human rights violations related to Leonela’s transfemicide. 

Speaking on the ruling, the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center explains, “This ruling represents a long-awaited victory for trans women, LGBTI people, and all those who have been victims of violence and structural discrimination in Honduras.”
