The Inter-American Court of Human Rights on Monday ruled that the Honduran government violated trans activist Vicky Hernández’s right to life and was responsible for her 2009 murder.

The case, led by RFK Human Rights and Red Lésbica Cattrachas, is the first before the Court involving the death of a trans person and sets a legal precedent across Latin America, which has the highest concentration of trans murders in the world.

As part of its ruling, which was issued on the 12-year anniversary of Vicky’s death, the Court has ordered the state of Honduras to pay reparations to Vicky’s family, publicly acknowledge its role in her death and re-open its investigation into Vicky’s murder, as well as adopt measures to better protect the LGBTQ+ community, including allowing people to update their gender identity in documents.
