The climate emergency is the defining crisis of our time. In response to the climate crisis, environmental defenders are protecting our planet in a myriad of ways, including through protest against and peaceful resistance to extractive industries or through traditional farming practices, journalism, lawyering, land management, and various other means. At the same time, a number of legal initiatives have been started around the world in response to the climate emergency, including various lawsuits and multiple requests for advisory opinions on States’ obligations in regard to climate change from international and regional courts and tribunals.
To connect these interventions to the human rights implications of climate change, as well as the struggles faced and work conducted by environmental defenders on the ground, this webinar will discuss recent legal initiatives, including the requests for advisory opinions, and how they might bolster protections for human rights and environmental defenders.
This webinar is co-hosted by the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), and the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU).
