New York – Ketanji Brown Jackson could be the first former public defender and Black woman to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. As a human rights organization dedicated to a more just and equal world, we welcome the expanded perspectives that greater professional and personal diversity can bring to the Court. However, to truly end mass incarceration, America must have a judiciary comprising advocates who have spent careers fighting for the poor and working class. In a judiciary dominated by former defenders of corporate interests and the carceral state, this nomination must be a first step toward change on a broader scale.
