Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights is seeking applications and nominations for its Vice President of Communications position to lead our Communications Department. At a critical moment in time for the world, RFKHR is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader who will further optimize the performance of communications channels every day, increase the engagement and loyalty of our community of supporters, and focus special fire power on several key initiatives to significantly increase our impact.

The Communications Department is the core team dedicated to the visibility of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and their work is key to the organization’s future success. The more people know about the great work we do, the larger the impact we can make as we serve our mission. The Communications team is focused on taking the organization to the next level, enhancing our reputation and increasing our visibility.

The Vice President of Communications will oversee the four large areas that our communications/marketing covers, 1) Managing all external communications including newsletters, marketing materials, web based media, social media, speech writing and public relations content; 2) Oversee Public and Media Relations via consulting contracts with our PR Firm (currently Weber Shandwick), our 5 Social Media providers (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Youtube), project consultants, website providers and event communication teams as well as securing radio, TV, online and print opportunities for brand growth; 3) Build and manage donor communication pieces, including annual report and media packets as well as generate and oversee all social media content; and 4) Overseeing our web content, which includes building upon our latest website migration by working in coordination with third party contractors and developers to ensure web content maintenance.

Reporting to the Executive Director of RFK Human Rights, the Vice President of Communications will supervise three full-time staffers: our current Senior Writer, Digital Communications Manager, and our Project and Graphics Manager. There will be an additional budgeted open position to be determined by this role. This role will both support and work closely with the Communications Committee of the Board. The new Vice President will be an ambitious, innovative leader, an excellent manager, and a brilliant communications/marketing strategist motivated to lead RFKHR’s visibility and brand work. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for human rights in the U.S. and abroad and a deep and authentic commitment to community centered advocacy & communications. S/He/They will be adept at building and maintaining strong working partnerships that drive the strategic priorities of the team.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned communications professional with demonstrated experience integrating communication/marketing strategy across campaigns and program teams. S/He/They will be an excellent people manager with the ability to work collaboratively with the staff in equitable and inclusive ways that honor the identities, backgrounds, and experiences of the team and colleagues across the organization.

Responsibilities:

Core Communications:

  • Manage all external communications, including newsletters, marketing materials, web based media, social media, speech writing, and public relations content

  • Manage internal communications staff and interns

  • Oversee external contractors

  • Draft and manage event communications, including invitations, appeals, and press releases

  • Oversee crisis communications plans including support for programmatic communication activities

  • Offer support and guidance to overseas affiliates and partner organizations

Public Relations and Media Relations

  • Secure radio, TV, online and print interviews for Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights

  • Cultivate and maintain brand profile and presence

Donor Communications and Marketing

  • Draft and compile monthly newsletter in collaboration with programs

  • Build and manage stewardship and donor communication pieces to constituents

  • Execute yearly annual report

  • Develop donor media packets

  • Establish organizational message map to ensure cohesive, coordinated organization wide plan

  • Improve photos, videos and online presence

Web Content

  • Generate engaging, lively content for website on a daily basis

  • Manage uploading, rotating and maintenance of web content

  • Back-end maintenance of Google Analytics

  • Coordinate social media interfaces with other channels of content delivery

  • Manage interactions with program specific sites

  • Ensure coordination between external and internal systems

  • Identify and execute ways to achieve shared impact across other RFKHR programs, to mobilize RFKHR stakeholders in support of the work, and to increase the visibility of RFKHR and our work before the general public.

Supervisor Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and training of department staff.

  • Serve on the organization’s Senior Team (attending biweekly meetings).

  • Advocate for and support direct reports’ decision-making and innovation within program and collaboration across the organization.

  • Provide feedback and guidance for team members to successfully comprehend and align individual goals with program and organization goals and strategies.

  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations for program staff.

  • Successfully align programmatic goals across the organization with RFK Human Rights’ strategic priorities.

  • Advocate for additional resources, staff capacity, or training needed for program success in discussion with the Executive Director.

A successful candidate must have the following skills and experiences:

  • At least 7 years of working experience within communications/marketing and demonstrated experience in a senior leadership or management role;

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills, you manage individuals and teams collaboratively with a commitment to fostering individual and collective development and growth mindset.

  • A demonstrated passion for RFKHR’s mission and demonstrated commitment to community-centered advocacy;

  • Ability to build a team and strategically prioritize the organization’s resources to reach its maximum potential;

  • You have the ability to ethically tell stories of those with different backgrounds and perspectives;

  • Comprehensive experience with website development, social media campaigns, public relations, and SEO;

  • Ability to provide effective feedback, you’re able to manage up and horizontally;

  • Ability to initiate new ideas and initiatives with the ability to institutionalize them and build structure as needed;

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;

  • Strong attention to detail and able to scope out errors, including a willingness to own and fix mistakes;

  • Exceptional time management, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at once;

  • High level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information;

  • Innovative thinking, willingness to voice your opinions, and a strong work ethic are essential;

  • Strong sense of teamwork that builds positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, and a willingness to help others;

  • Believes in inclusivity when working with colleagues with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
