RFK Human Rights Condemns Assassination of Honduran Activist Berta Cáceres

(March 4, 2016 I Washington, D.C.) Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights joins the voices of the human rights community to condemn the killing of Berta Cáceres and call for a full and swift investigation of this awful crime. Berta, a courageous Honduran human rights defender and environmental activist from the Lenca indigenous people, was cowardly assassinated at her home on March 3.

“Honduras and the entire world have lost one of the most committed and genuine human rights defenders,” said Kerry Kennedy, president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. “The government of Honduras must act swiftly to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for this terrible crime. Bringing the perpetrators to justice is the only way to curb the vicious cycle of violence against human rights defenders in the country and the region.”

Berta was the co-founder of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (COPINH). She dedicated her life to defend the rights of the Lenca people to their ancestral lands and their right to self-determination. In 2015 she won the Goldman Environmental Prize for her work to protect the Gualcarque River from the “Agua Zarca” hydroelectric project.

“We must all honor Berta by continuing the struggle for the protection of human rights and the environment” said Angelita Baeyens, Programs Director at Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. “the voices of human rights defenders and indigenous leaders need to be heard, not silenced”.

Berta’s dedicated and selfless human rights work made her subject of consistent threats and harassment. Despite being beneficiary of Precautionary Measures granted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Honduran government failed to adopt the necessary measures to protect Berta’s life. Now, the government must make sure that her surviving family and the members of COPINH are protected and that the persons responsible for Berta's murder are identified, prosecuted, and duly sanctioned.

Kennedy Human Rights se une a las voces de la comunidad de derechos humanos para condenar el asesinato de Berta Cáceres y hacer un llamado para que se lleve a cabo una pronta y completa investigación sobre este horrible crimen. Berta, una valiente defensora de derechos humanos y líder ambientalista del pueblo indígena Lenca de Honduras, fue cobardemente asesinada en su casa el 3 de marzo.

“Honduras y el mundo entero ha perdido a una de las defensoras de derechos humanos más genuinas y comprometidas” expresó Kerry Kennedy, presidenta de Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. “el Gobierno de Honduras debe actuar rápidamente para asegurarse que los autores respondan por este terrible crimen. Llevar a los perpetradores antes la justicia es la única manera de frenar este círculo vicioso de violencia en contra de las y los defensores de derechos humanos en el país y en la región”.

Berta era la cofundadora del Consejo Cívico de Organizaciones Populares e Indígenas de Honduras (COPINH). Ella dedicó su vida a defender los derechos del pueblo Lenca a sus tierras y territorios ancestrales, así como su derecho a la autodeterminación. En el 2015 fue galardonada con el Premio Ambiental Goldman por su trabajo para proteger el Río Gualcarque del proyecto hidroeléctrico “Agua Zarca”.

“Debemos honrar a Berta continuando su lucha por la protección de los derechos humanos y el medio ambiente” expresó Angelita Baeyens, Directora de Programas de Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. “Las voces de las y los defensores y líderes indígenas tienen que ser escuchadas, no silenciadas”.

El trabajo dedicado y desinteresado de Berta la hizo objeto constante de amenazas y hostigamientos. Pese a ser beneficiaria de medidas cautelares otorgadas por la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, el gobierno hondureño omitió adoptar las medidas necesarias para proteger la vida de Berta. Ahora, el gobierno debe asegurarse de proteger a su familia y a los miembros de COPINH y que las personas responsables por el asesinato de Berta sean identificadas, juzgadas y debidamente sancionadas.
