Honduras Responsible for Trans Woman’s Murder, International Court Rules

"RFK Human Rights and Red Lésbica Cattrachas won a landmark ruling before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on behalf of the family of Vicky Hernández.

Vicky, a 26-year-old Honduran trans woman, was targeted and killed by state security forces in 2009 during the country’s coup d’etat. Her death set off a wave of violent attacks against the LGBTQ+ community yet local officials failed to prioritize and properly investigate her case, only further solidifying a culture of impunity that has long allowed perpetrators, including Vicky’s attackers, to evade justice.

Thanks to the Inter-American Court’s decision, Honduras will now have to take responsibility for Vicky’s murder, publicly acknowledging its role in her death and relaunching efforts to investigate her case, as well as provide financial reparations to Vicky’s family. The Court also ordered Honduras to establish measures to protect the LGBTQ+ community from harm, including allowing people to update their gender identity in IDs and public records, setting a standard for other countries in the region to follow."
