Big Sugar describes the dangerous work of thousands of West Indian workers in the American sugar industry and the miserable conditions in which they live.

A former policeman and musician, Alec Wilkinson joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in 1980. He is the author of ten books and has received numerous literary awards for his work.
