The Kingdom of Swaziland, Africa’s last remaining absolute monarchy, is an advocacy focal point for RFK Human Rights. Working with prisoners of conscience Thulani Maseko and Bheki Makhubu, we have helped attract international attention to what is one of the world’s most quietly repressive nations. In 2014, RFK Human Rights and its international partners launched the #SwaziJustice campaign in order to raise awareness about the ongoing plight of both Thulani and Bheki, as well as the overall and increasing crackdown on civic activists and pro-democracy supporters across the country. We remain an outspoken advocate for democratic reform and respect for the rule of law in Swaziland, with our work often cited by both African and international media outlets.
